Style. VVVVVV had a subtle aesthetic and really understood retrofuturism. SMB is far too busy, and employs too many cliches in contructing its game world - acid pits, keys, fans, the stuff you’d find in any freeware flash game. Super Meat Boy’s shilouette levels were inspired by every indie game ever. Better.
Music. VVVVVV’s chiptunes were minimal and held up to repetition...
